The afternoon sun on your shoulders, the spring sings under your feet, and then—whoosh—clean water, big smiles, and cheers from the bleachers. That’s the vibe at Hilo’s Springboard Diving Club, and it’s the kind of simple joy your whole ʻohana will still be talking about at dinner.

This Thursday at 2:30 PM, Kawamoto Pool turns into playground-meets-playground—where keiki, teens, and grownups all learn to bounce, breathe, and take the leap together. It’s free, friendly, and very Hilo.

What to Expect

Picture the shimmer of the pool under trade winds, the steady rhythm of splashes, and Coach-led tips that make you better with every jump. New board, fresh stand, and that satisfying “thunk” as the spring sends you skyward.

First-timers practice safe entries and simple form. Confident divers try tuck jumps, pikes, and smooth approaches. Parents chill in the shade, swapping stories, while the keiki cheer each other on. It’s a true community mix—no pressure, just progress.

Insider Tips

  • Bring: Towel, water bottle, snug swimsuit, and a hair tie if you’ve got long hair. Goggles if you like.
  • Sunscreen: Go reef-safe and apply before you arrive (even pools appreciate clean water).
  • Footwear: Slippers you can slide off by the deck. The concrete can warm up.
  • Seating: Shade spots go first—come a little early if you want the breezy corner.
  • Etiquette: No glass on deck, listen for lifeguard and coach calls, and cheer loud when someone nails their first dive.

Why We Love It

Because you feel brave and light at the same time. The board hums, the water sparkles, and the whole place sounds like summertime—even in the middle of the week. It’s free, it’s local, and it turns “I can’t” into “I did!” in about three tries.

FAQ

  • Is it really for all ages? Yes—keiki, teens, and adults are welcome. Coaches tailor tips to your comfort level.
  • Do I need experience? Nope. First-timers learn basics and safe entries before anything fancy.
  • Do I need to register? It’s free and open—text Coach DJ at 213-952-3173 or email dj@capitalist.com if you want to give a heads up or ask questions.
  • What should I wear? A snug swimsuit that stays put on the board. Rash guard if you prefer.
  • Can parents watch? Absolutely—there’s spectator space on deck. Bring water and a hat.
